“All of us believe that many criticisms of the Arizona bill are deeply misleading.”

As CAP President Cathi Herrod said:

The attacks on SB 1062 show politics at its absolute worse. They represent precisely why so many people are sick of the modern political debate. Instead of having an honest discussion about the true meaning of religious liberty, opponents of the bill have hijacked this discussion through lies, personal attacks, and irresponsible reporting.

The truth about SB 1062 is much more simple. Please take a moment to read this letter sent to Governor Brewer from University of Virginia School of Law Professor Douglas Laycock and 10 other law professors, imploring the Governor to “make [her] decision on the basis of accurate information” and not on egregious misrepresentations made by critics.

The letter says:

“Some of us are Republicans; some of us are Democrats. Some of us are religious; some of us are not. Some of us oppose same-sex marriage; some of us support it. Nine of the eleven signers of this letter believe that you should sign the bill; two are unsure. But all of us believe that many criticisms of the Arizona bill are deeply misleading.”

ICYMI: War on Women? The Undeniable Roots of Pro-Life Feminism

Last week, the Arizona Republic ran two “Fact Checks” on statements made by Representative Terri Proud about the history of women supporting the pro-life movement.

In both cases, the Republic ignored the overwhelming evidence that Susan B. Anthony was a pro-life supporter and said Rep. Proud’s statements were not true. (more…)

BREAKING NEWS: Gov. Brewer Signs Bill Prohibiting Abortion After 20 Weeks

Governor Jan Brewer has signed HB 2036, which prohibits abortion after 20 weeks. The bill, sponsored by Representative Kimberly Yee and supported by Center for Arizona Policy (CAP), is a momentous victory for pro-life advocates in the state.

HB 2036, called “The Mother’s Health and Safety Act”:

  • Prohibits abortion after 20 weeks because of the safety risks to the mother and the pain endured by the preborn child.
  • Ensures women have an ultrasound at least 24 hours prior to an abortion.
  • Establishes an informed consent website which details the facts about fetal development, risks of abortion, and services available.
  • Requires doctors performing surgical abortions to have admitting privileges at a hospital within thirty miles of the abortion facility.

“Today, I applaud and thank Gov. Brewer, Representative Kimberly Yee, Senator Nancy Barto and the many strong, pro-life men and women who led the effort to enact this much-needed law,” said Cathi Herrod, President of Center for Arizona Policy. “HB 2036 provides for the health needs of women considering an abortion, ensuring that women have all the information they need when making this life-changing decision. Abortion not only ends the life of a preborn child, but it also seriously endangers the health and safety of women.”

While 7 states have similar laws that prohibit abortion after 20 weeks of a pregnancy, Arizona is the first in the nation to do so because abortion at this late stage presents a much greater risk to maternal health.

In signing this bill, Gov. Brewer has continued her record as the “pro-life Governor.” Since taking office, Gov. Brewer has signed a number of bills that protect women and the preborn, including legislation that requires women have an in-person consultation with a doctor 24 hours before the abortion, prohibits non-doctors from performing abortions, and requires written, notarized parental consent before a minor can have an abortion.

Please take time to email Gov. Jan Brewer to thank her for being our pro-life Governor.

Arizona Day of Prayer Withstands Legal Attack

The tradition of designating an official day of prayer began with the Continental Congress in 1775. Since then, every president, with no exception, has recognized the importance of God in our nation.

So when the Wisconsin-based “Freedom From Religion Foundation” (FFRF) brought their baseless lawsuit against Governor Brewer for declaring the Arizona Day of Prayer, I was confident the state would overcome this challenge.

Freedom From Religion Foundation Continues Their Crusade

The extreme Freedom From Religion Foundation continues their work to deem virtually any public expression of faith unconstitutional. This week, they asked the Supreme Court to declare unconstitutional the practice of requiring public school students to recite or listen to the Pledge of Allegiance because of the inclusion of the phrase “One nation, under God.”

This is the same organization that sued Governor Brewer two weeks ago for declaring the Arizona Day of Prayer. Governor Brewer has since said she would defend her declaration of prayer.

The name of this organization “Freedom From Religion Foundation” underlines their stark misinterpretation of the Constitution. Organizations like this, and others that seek to ban or limit the free practice of faith completely ignore the protections provided within the Constitution, and our nation’s rich heritage of religious expression.
